With Mardi Gras season at its close, our post-celebration includes some rare photographs that LIFE Magazine left unpublished in its documentation of Mardi Gras.

In February 1938, editors sent photographer William Vandivert to chronicle the carnival, showing how we have maintained a centuries old tradition of refined debauchery in the midst of the Great Depression.
